What began as a challenge for the New Millennium became a periodic reprise over many years. An unconventional pilgrimage without the central motivation of religion, the journey became as heartening as the act of donning the well-worn boots that set us on our way. Motivated by botany, culture, social interaction, I would rate the Way of Saint James as an experience not to be missed, with its roots, its glimpses into other lives, its humanity, and the sense of achievement that characterised every day's walking.
